Company: Fybraworks is a young start-up aiming to disrupt the $ 1.4 trillion traditional ag-based meat market by growing real animal meat proteins in yeasts and fungi through a fermentation process. This results in growing real animal meat proteins that are cheaper to produce, free of hormones and antibiotics, and can be produced rapidly in a laboratory.

Position Purpose: The Scientist leads and conducts research on microbial protein expression and function analysis for novel food ingredients. This role has tremendous growth and career development opportunities in a vibrant start-up environment. This is a one-year assignment with possibility to convert into a permanent position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiates, directs and executes scientific research and/or development strategies for projects.

  • Maintains a safe and orderly laboratory and ensures compliance with all safety policies and practices

  • Maintains concise laboratory notebooks, signed and witnessed in a timely manner.

  • May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise top management.

  • May participate in development of patent applications.

  • Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of company's technology and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.

  • Works on extremely complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables.

  • Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

  • Demonstrates an extensive repertoire of experimental techniques for independently planning and executing experiments.

  • Demonstrates the ability to critically evaluate and interpret scientific data to recommend a future course of action to attain project objectives.

  • Assists with recruiting and annual personnel performance appraisals.

  • Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may provide guidance and oversee the activities of other lower-level personnel.

  • Regularly reports research progress to stake holders.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • The incumbent is expected to demonstrate proficiency in DNA cloning, protein expression and analysis, preferably in microbial systems such as bacteria, yeast and fungi. Experience with filamentous fungi genetics is highly desired.

  • Requires a comprehensive understanding of microbial physiology, biochemistry and excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.

  • Demonstrates potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought.

Education, Work Experience and/or Licensure

  • Requires a M.S. or higher degree plus 2 years of independent protein expression experience either in an academic or industrial setting. Outstanding candidate with B.S. degree will also be considered.

Language Skills

  • No special language skills required, beyond English fluency

  • Basic office and laboratory environment
